Girls' Brigade

Girls' Brigade originally began life in 1893, formed in Ireland, which was followed by the Girls' Guild in Scotland (1900) and the Girls' Life Brigade in England (1902). Girls' Brigade, as we know it today, was formed in 1964 with these three organisations merging together. Today there are over 3,000 GB companies in 52 countries around the world. The vision of Girls' Brigade Northern Ireland is to be “recognised as a dynamic, relevant, Christ-centred organisation effectively reaching out to all girls to value, nurture and equip them for life ”with the aim of helping girls to “become followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, and through self-control, reverence and a sense of responsibility, to find true enrichment of life”. The motto of Girls' Brigade is to "Seek, Serve and Follow Christ”. It is a growing and thriving Organisation which marked its 125th anniversary.

As a uniformed organisation, we take pride in wearing our uniforms each week. On each girls uniform is the GB Crest which has 4 symbols - a Cross, representing Christ and His Church; a Lamp, to remind us that our lives shine as a light out upon the world; a Crown, to remember that Christ is our King and lastly a Torch, symbolising the flame of Christ's living Spirit and our devotion to Him.

Our own Company (71st) began in and around 1948 meeting in the old Nissan hut under the captaincy of Mrs Preece along with her officers, Miss Rowan, Miss East and Miss Wilson. With annual displays, camp, cake fairs and parties, not much has changed! Our Company is one of 12 companies within the local area of Castlewood District which runs competitions and opportunities for girls from other companies to meet together.

We are so privileged to have a GB company within Bloomfield and have the girls attend each week on Thursday evening. We have been blessed over the last 71 years and are thankful for God's guidance and direction.  Our Company provides girls with a safe space to play and learn and to be taught Scriptural truths and it's a blessing to be part of these girls lives. We pray that the Company will continue for another 70 years and look forward to welcoming all the girls who come through our doors.
